Camping at Holmsley Campsite In The New Forest

A couple of years ago we decided to buy ourselves a tent and take the kids camping.  We aren’t the most experienced of campers (read here – zero experience), but we liked the idea of getting away from it all.  So one weekend off we went to Go Outdoors to view their selection of display tents and chose one which we felt suited us best.

Next, after buying various other kit we knew we’d need, we researched campsites.  We decided it was best to go somewhere reasonably near home so at least if it all went horribly wrong we could always just abandon ship and come back (see how much faith I had?!).  I’ve always loved the New Forest since having caravan holidays there as a small child so that’s where we decided to aim for.  During our search we came across Holmsley Campsite.  It seemed a good place to start so we booked 2 nights to give it a try.

On arrival at Holmsley we checked in at the reception desk.  There we were given tags to attach to the tent and a map of the site.  After a good look around we chose a sunny spot near the facilities with plenty of space for the kids to run around.  We learned a lot on that trip.  By the following summer we had a much bigger tent and went back to Holmsley somewhat wiser than the first time (and with a tent we could actually stand up in!)

Holmsley is still our go-to place if we want to go camping.  It has everything we need and is in a great location too.  The facilities on site are well looked after and the staff are fantastic.  They really couldn’t be more helpful.  The on-site shop has all the food and camping supplies you could need.  There is also the added bonus of freshly cooked breakfast pastries in the mornings and a take-away service in the evenings!

There is a kids play area and loads of grass for ball games, riding bikes, etc.  The service blocks are cleaned daily and in really good order.  There are plenty of toilets, showers and wash basins in both the mens and ladies.  Between the two is the washing up room, again with plenty of sinks.

Having been used as an airfield in WWII Holmsley has a lot of hard ground. This means you will need rock pegs in order to pitch your tent.  It’s a great location to use as a base for walks in the forest, bike riding and visiting the nearby villages of Burley and Bransgore.  Slightly further afield are New Milton, Christchurch and Bournemouth.  There are always plenty of ponies right outside the gate and lots of space to run around and explore.
