We were very happy to be asked recently to review Nicola J Rowley’s latest children’s book James And The Birthday Balloon. The book is a paperback illustrated story aimed at children aged 3-7 years. It seemed perfect for Cody who is almost 5 so yesterday we settled down to have a read.
The story is about a boy called James who goes to his best friend’s birthday party. They are each given an enormous balloon by the party entertainer. Unfortunately James’s best friend drops her balloon and while running after it, she trips and falls over. This results in a trip to the hospital which feels a bit scary. James comes to the rescue though and saves the day with a small act of kindness to his friend.
This is an uplifting story of friendship as well as reassuring for any child who needs to visit the hospital. It highlights that sometimes accidents happen but there is always help at hand. James’s kind gesture puts a smile on lots of peoples faces. It’s a lovely way of teaching kindness through a children’s book.
James And The Birthday Balloon has bright, colourful, clear images and is easy to follow. The language used is simple and easy to understand. With just 2-3 sentences per page it’s a good book for early readers to have a go at reading with support. It also includes a free audio book read by none other than TV’s Dr Ranj. Dr Ranj is very popular in our household so this is a big hit! I also love the fact that for every copy of the book that’s sold, £1 is donated to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. This hospital provides vital life-saving treatment for children in South London and beyond. What a fantastic cause to support. Other authors/publishers should definitely take note of this.
We thoroughly enjoyed this story book and would recommend it to others in a similar age group.
