In June me and the kids were invited to visit the Oxford Castle Quarter and find out more about it. I had always assumed it was just Oxford Castle Unlocked there, I had no idea there were other businesses and events as well! The area includes a variety of restaurants including Pizza Express, The Slug and Lettuce, 1855 wine bar plus the well known hotel Malmaison. The lovely laid back atmosphere is becoming a unique backdrop for a number of open-air events this Summer. Read on to find out more……
From 18th June – 11th August there will be a festival of theatre with Shakespeare best work shared in open-air theatrical productions. There will be Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello and more. Some of Oxford’s most talented actors will take to the stage in the romantic setting of the Castle yard. Pre-bookable picnics are also available from just £8.95 per pack.
As well as theatre the Castle yard will be showcasing films with a wonderful outdoor cinema experience. The film festival will take place 26th-29th September, finishing with family favourite Paddington 2. Bean bags and headphones are all provided to make the whole experience enjoyable for everyone. Not only that but you can order and take away dishes from Pizza Express and Prezzo to enjoy while watching the movie.
If food is your thing then Bitten Street is the event for you. This amazing street food market takes place 11am-3pm on Saturday 5th August. Each individual seller is picked for their delicious food and quirky vans/trade stalls. This is a great chance to get all the family trying some new flavours.
Another opportunity for some shopping is the Oxford Etsy Market which is being held on Sunday 22nd July. There will be local crafters selling their beautiful handmade items from tote bags to cushion covers and more. Well worth checking it out!
Of course with it being the Summer holidays there must be something just for the kids. Oxford Castle Quarter will be hosting not one but two circus skills workshops for the youngsters. These will take place on Thursday 9th and Thursday 30th August 11am-2pm. Better still they are absolutely free to take part in! Have a go at unicycling, juggling, plate spinning and more. For the grown ups there are plenty of deck chairs to relax in and watch all the fun.
One final event for the kids is the Knight School being held at Oxford Castle. This is running every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 30th July -31st August 12-1pm. It’s aimed at 5-11 year olds and involves learning how to sword fight, archery and designing your own shield!
