The Alternative Selfie

Sharp Shots Photo Club, along with Nikon School and The Royal Photographic Society have just launched a photography challenge with a difference.  Children aged 7-15 years are being asked to capture images that show who they really are, rather than just the usual selfie.  Intrigued?

The idea is to encourage children and teens to think beyond looks and express their personality instead through a series of images.  Social media has taken over these days and more often we are seeing people pushing for that ‘perfect’ image.   This challenge is about showing who you really are and hopes, in part, to help boost self esteem and confidence.

The competition is open now and closes at midnight on 31st August 2018.  There are two categories: 7-11 years and 10-15 years.  Kids can enter via Instagram by following and tagging Sharp Shots and RPS and using the hashtag #SSaltselfie.  Alternatively they can also enter via email.  More details can be found here:

The winner will be judged based on creativity and originality, as well as photographic skill.  The 7-11 years category winner will walk away with a Nikon Coolpix W100 Digital Camera worth £129.  The 10-15 years category winner will receive a Nikon Coolpix P900 Digital Camera worth a whopping £539!  Alongside this, both winners will receive an RPS goody bag and their photos will be displayed in an online gallery.  10 runners up will also have their images displayed in the gallery.

My 11 year old stepdaughter loves taking photos and now she has a phone of her own she is constantly taking selfies.  I will definitely be encouraging her to take part in this challenge to show the world her true personality.  She’s very creative and a bit mad so I’m sure whatever she comes out with will raise a smile!
