The Nutcracker and the mouse king stage show at Cornerstone Arts Centre Didcot

The Nutcracker & The Mouse King At Cornerstone

On Friday we were incredibly lucky to be invited by the Cornerstone Arts Centre  (Didcot) to see the opening night of their first ever in-house production – The Nutcracker & The Mouse King.

This adaptation, from the original 1816 story by ETA Hoffmann, follows a family who are stranded on Chistmas Eve and find themselves in the shop of eccentric toy maker Drosselmeyer. They are led on an adventure with toys coming to life and an evil mouse king who wants to destroy all toys and block imaginations.

The set of Drosselmeyer’s toy shop is absolutely stunning, with so many recognisable vintage toys and a lovely nostalgic feel to it. Kate Spencer who plays Drosselmeyer is absolutely superb. Watching her is completely enchanting.  She was our favourite character, alongside the Nutcracker of course, who is played by Niabl Kerrigon.

Another favourite was Claude the accordian monkey who was absolutely hilarious and had the whole audience in fits of laughter.

Alongside the professional acting/musical cast is a company of local children who really bring the story and songs to life. The catchy songs and heartwarming storyline kept us enthralled throughout the entire show.

Will the toys manage to escape the Mouse King? You’ll have to go and watch it to see for yourselves! Book your tickets here https://www.cornerstone-arts.org.  We highly recommend it!
