Last week we enjoyed a day in Oxford as a family to celebrate my 30th birthday. Although we only live a few miles away we have very rarely visited the city centre. We decided this was our perfect opportunity to enjoy some shopping, eating and a bit of sight-seeing too!
Our first stop was the new Westgate Shopping Centre. We were delighted to discover a Wallace and Gromit trail around the shops and had fun finding lots of very funky Gromit statues! We used the handy maps in the shopping centre to work our our route to the Ashmolean Museum and headed off in the rain.
The museum was only a 5-10 minute walk from the shopping centre and we found it without getting lost. We enjoyed a few hours looking round at all the amazing galleries. Can you believe there are 5 floors full of displays in this building?! It’s huge! My favourite area was the Ancient Egyptian gallery on the Ground Floor. I have always been fascinated by the Ancient Egyptians and some of the artifacts on display were just incredible. They had mummies and sarcophagus’s, canopic jars, hieroglyphics carved into stone and so much more. We all loved it. You can read our full review of the Ashmolean Museum here: Ashmolean Museum
After a few hours exploring the museum we decided to find somewhere for lunch. We came across Cosmos which we knew would be ideal with the kids. Cody and Lilian especially enjoy trying new things. Cosmos has just about every cuisine you can imagine and as it’s a buffet restaurant you can try whatever you like. Lois basically had a cooked breakfast with prawn crackers. Not quite the combination I would have gone for personally!
Following our lovely meal we had a stroll around the shops and enjoyed some retail therapy. I must admit I didn’t end up getting anything for me but we did manage to kit the kids and Danny out with a few things they needed. I am definitely going to go back to the Westgate Shopping Centre without the kids one day to do some proper clothes shopping for me.
After our lovely day out we headed home to spend time with friends and family and enjoyed yet another meal out, this time at Prezzo. I was spoiled rotten with some lovely cards and gifts and have decided that turning 30 isn’t so bad after all! 😉
