Hog & Hedge cafe in Newbury

The Hog & Hedge Cafe Review

The new Hog & Hedge in Newbury opened its doors in October on Northbrook Street.  It’s a lovely cafe offering freshly-made food and speciality coffee all made on-site on a daily basis.  You can enjoy breakfast, lunch or a spot of tea and cake, whatever takes your fancy.

The Hog & Hedge has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with lots of cosy nooks and sofas.  It’s decorated in a rustic theme but with modern touches.  You place your order at the till then take a seat and your food/drink will be brought to you.  The staff were really polite and friendly during our visit.

We felt this is the sort of place you could easily stay for a couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere and catching up with friends over a coffee or lunch.  There are plenty of sockets and USB charge points plus free wifi if you want to work from the cafe too which we thought was a fab idea.  There are counters upstairs and downstairs where you can help yourself to free tap water, cutlery, sauces, napkins, etc.

For families there is a fab little play area for younger ones to enjoy and some colouring books/crayons to help yourself to.  On top of this they have loads of plastic cutlery/plates/cups etc and a microwave for warming baby food.  All of this is in the same area at the back of the cafe so it’s easy and convenient for parents.  The baby change toilet is also next to this area and has a child sized toilet seat as well.  All little touches which make life so much easier for parents!

The food we had and saw being served was really good and the pricing reasonable.  I had a sausage baguette which had really lovely flavour sausages in it and fried red onion as well as a small side salad.  It was piping hot and delicious.  Danny had the ploughmans lunch which was well presented and equally enjoyable.  The only slight criticism we had was the cheese as we prefer a stronger flavour but that is all down to personal taste.  The cost of a sausage baguette is £5.75 and the ploughmans £6.95.

Its great to know that most of the food served is locally sourced and it’s all made fresh on-site each day.  The cafe serves lots of speciality coffees so if coffee is your thing then its definitely a good place to be!

We really liked the atmosphere and food at the Hog & Hedge and really hope its a success as it’s great to see an independent cafe on the high street.  Do pay them a visit next time you’re in town!

N.B. We were gifted a meal and drink each by the Hog & Hedge in order to carry out our review, however all words, photos and opinions are that of my own.
