What’s On In Oxfordshire May Half Term 2019

Can you believe May half term is almost upon us already?!  I’m sure we only just had the Easter holidays a moment ago!  This has been a really short term but I’m quite happy to have the kids off again for more fun and adventures.  Here’s our listing of what’s on in Oxfordshire and beyond over half term

Saturday 25th May

  • Meet Peter Rabbit at 4 Kingdoms during story time intervals throughout the day.  You can read our review of 4 Kingdoms here: http://mumof2point5.com/daysout/south-east/4-kingdoms-adventure-park/
  • Oxfordshire BBQ festival in the Market Square (Abingdon) 10am-5pm.  BBQ from around the world, artisan street food market and live music.
  • Elmer story time and craft at Wantage library 10:30-11:30am.  FREE but space is limited so please call the library and book in advance.
  • Ready, Set, Draw at Oxford University Museum of Natural History 1-3pm.  Draw your favourite specimen from the museum and the best ones will be displayed over the summer.  FREE

Sunday 26th May

  • Paddington Bear will be making appearances throughout the day to meet visitors at 4 Kingdoms Adventure Park.  Standard admission fees apply.
  • Family Fun Day at the Marlborough (Didcot) 2-5pm.  Bouncy castles, face painting, sweet cart, BBQ and suprise guest.  FREE entry.
  • Story Safari at Oxford University Museum of Natural History immersive storytelling sessions throughout the day in a fantastical pumpkin tent!  Booking essential.

Monday 27th May

  • Harwell Feast 10am-5pm.  Parade through the village followed by fun and games at the recreational ground. 
  • Cogges Family Festival 10am-5pm.  Live music, morris dancers, crafts, teddy bears picnic, lawn games, circus skills, animal handling sessions, scarecrow competition and more.  Normal admission fees apply.  You can find out more about Cogges here: http://mumof2point5.com/daysout/south-east/cogges-manor-farm/

Tuesday 28th May

  • Enjoy summer themed craft activities in the beautiful setting of Harcourt Arboretum 10am-4pm.  £2 donation per child plus normal entry fee.
  • Night safari at Wallingford Castle Meadows with the Earth Trust 8:30-10:30pm.  £10 adult, £5 child, booking essential.  Check the small mammal traps, use bat detectors to listen to them, after dark set up a moth trap and see what you find.
  • Dinosaurs themed crafts and specimen handling at Oxford University Museum of Natural History 1-4pm FREE
  • What Killed The Dinosaurs? Immersive science show with songs and peril! 2-3pm at Oxford University Museum of Natural History.  Booking essential.

Wednesday 29th May

  • Make your own paracord bracelet at Wantage library 10:30-12pm.  Suitable for age 8+.  FREE but must be booked in advance by calling the library directly.
  • Wildlife Wednesday at Wallingford Castle Meadows 10am-12pm. Suggested donation £2 per child. 
  • Throwaway craft (junk modelling) at the Abingdon County Hall Museum 10:30-12:30pm and 1-3pm.  FREE drop in session, just turn up (donations to the museum welcome).
  • Dinosaurs themed crafts and specimen handling at Oxford University Museum of Natural History 1-4pm FREE
  • What Killed The Dinosaurs? Immersive science show with songs and peril! 2-3pm at Oxford University Museum of Natural History.  Booking essential.
  • Moth trapping at Farmoor Nature Reserve 9:3-12:30pm.  Donations welcome.
  • Rocket Mice with Science Oxford at Cogges Manor Farm 10:30am and 12pm.   Science workshop recommended for age 6+.  Booking essential.  £2 plus normal admission fee.

Thursday 30th May

  • The Big Book Of Bugs creative workshop with Yuval Zommer 11am and 2pm at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Fun bugtastic talk followed by an illustration demonstration. 

Friday 31st May

  • Father’s day drawing workshop with Little Foxglove Crafts 12-5:30pm at Sprouts Play Barn (Millets Farm). Design your own picture to be printed on the gift of your choice including cushions, t shirts, bags etc. 

Saturday 1st June

  • Annual Wild Fair at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History 10am-4pm.  Everything from beasts to bugs, live music to live wolves, ice cream to edible insects, birds of prey, etc,etc.   FREE entry
  • Wantage ComiCon 10am-5pm at King Alfred’s School.  Film guests, talks, activities, trade stalls, cosplay and more. 
  • Drawing Mania at Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage 10:30-11:30am. Use the museum collection as inspiration for your drawings. Equipment and guidance provided. FREE 

Sunday 2nd June

  • Transport Rally at Didcot Railway Centre and Ladygrove Park 10:30-5pm. Free vintage bus rides between the 2 venues. Cars and vintage vehicles on display, miniature railway including rides, sales stands and trains in operation. 

Ongoing Events

  • Colourscape will be at Waddesdon Manor for its 5th year running Saturday 25th May-Sunday 2nd June.  Discover 56 interlinked chambers with lights, music and colour.  Normal grounds admission fee applies (free for NT members) plus £5 per adult, £3 per child. 
  • East Hagbourne scarecrow trail Saturday 25th May – Sunday 9th June. Maps cost £1 from the community shop or Fleur De Lys pub. 
  • John Lawson’s Circus will be at Millets Farm entertaining families with their hour long show from Sunday 26th May-Saturday 1st June.
  • Children’s nature workshops every day 2-3pm Saturday 25th May – Sunday 2nd June at Blackwells Bookshop (Westgate centre, Oxford).  FREE
  • Mosaic making at Oxford Castle & Prison Monday 27th – Friday 31st May 12-1pm daily.  £9.50 per child (£16 for 2 children).  You can read our review of Oxford Castle here: http://mumof2point5.com/daysout/south-east/oxford-castle-prison/
  • Fun farm trail at Cogges Manor Farm Monday 27th – Friday 31st May.  £3 per trail sheet which can be redeemed in the farm shop once you’ve solved all the clues.
